AU-ACALAN Spotlight

ACALAN increases its presence in the member states of the African Union

According to chapter III, article 22 of the Statutes of the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), each member state of the African Union should designate a National Language Structures to serve as Focal Point of the Academy. As part of the working structures of ACALAN, the National Language Structures are supposed to work hand in hand with the Secretariat and the sub-regional Vehicular Cross-Border Language Commissions. The Secretariat consequently addressed official requests to the Ministries of Culture and or Ministries responsible for National Languages of the member states of the African Union to designate National Language Structures as Focal Points of ACALAN in their respective countries....

  

ACALAN encourages ECOWAS to adopt Fulfulde, Hausa and Madenkan as its working languages at the 6th meeting of the Ad hoc Committee in charge of monitoring ECOWAS Culture programmes

The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), presented the way forward on the choice of a common West African Language as a working language of ECOWAS at the 6th meeting of the Ad hoc Committee in charge of monitoring ECOWAS Culture programmes, held in Cotonou, Benin, between April 16 and 19, 2012. During this meeting, ACALAN ACALAN encouraged ECOWAS to adopt Fulfulde, Hausa and Madenkan as its working languages...

    - To promote convivial and functional multilingualism at every level, especially in the education sector;
    - To ensure the development and promotion of African languages as factors of African integration and development, of respect for values and mutual understanding and peace
